Holy Basil (Tulsi): The Adaptogen in Our Stress Reset Salve

May 12, 2026

I came to herbalism through psychology, so the stress herbs are close to my heart. Holy basil, also called tulsi, is one I keep coming back to.

What adaptogen really means

An adaptogen is a plant traditionally used to help the body cope with everyday stress. Tulsi sits near the top of that list. It has been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years, and modern reviews describe a combination of compounds, including eugenol, ursolic acid, and rosmarinic acid, that researchers connect to its calming, balancing reputation.

There is even a randomized, placebo controlled human trial that looked at a holy basil extract and self reported stress, mood, and sleep in adults under pressure. I find that kind of study encouraging. It does not mean a salve will change your stress hormones, and I would never claim that. It means the plant itself has a serious body of evidence behind its traditional use.

Why it is in Stress Reset

Our Stress Reset salve is a topical, aromatic blend. Holy basil leads, joined by St. John’s wort, hops, rosemary, and sage, finished with a little palo santo berry oil. The idea is simple. Rub a little on, breathe in the grounding aroma, and give yourself a small, intentional moment to reset. I use it on the back of my neck when the day gets loud.
